Sutton Hoo

Immortalised in the film, The Dig (2021) starring Ralph Fiennes, Sutton Hoo documents the discovery of the burial ship supposedly belonging to King Rædwald, whose remains were entombed in a mound some 1,400 years ago.

Discovered by Basil Brown, who never received fair praise for his accomplishment, the National Trust owned site at Woodbridge in Suffolk houses an interesting exhibition on the burial mounds, its history and relevance to our understanding of Anglo-Saxon life at that time.

To fully appreciate the several burial sites at Sutton Hoo, make sure you join a guided tour of the mounds and graves. The talk did last over an hour, which was a little long for me but you cannot enter the site on your own.

And make sure you climb the viewing platform for a 3D angle. If you get bored, there's a large pig farm in the distance to look at.

All the exhibits here are very convincing replicas, the originals being in Room 41 of the British Museum.
