Nao Victoria

In stark contrast to the multitude of white and chrome floating gin palaces, the Nao Victoria cast an imposing shadow over Sovereign Harbour.

Built in Spain in 1991, the Nao Victoria is a replica of the original vessel (same name) that was the first ship to complete a global circumnavigation from 1519 to 1522. Setting sail with four other ships, Nao Victoria completed the voyage alone.

Between 2004 and 2006 the modern replica made the same amazing maritime journey. I wish I had been on it.

Unfortunately, due to the ship's popularity we were ushered rather quickly on, around and off the boat. Shame really. It would have been nice to soak in some atmosphere.

The original Nao Victoria was a carrack, (nao translates to ship or vessel) and sank in 1570.

Nao Victoria was moored at Sovereign Harbour from 18th to 22nd of June 2025.
