Ham House and Garden
Situated only a 'chukka' walk (there's a polo club close-by) from the river Thames, Ham House sits grandly in the affluent borough of Ham, Richmond, London.
Unbelievably, this 17th century Stuart house was originally built in 1610 and gifted by King Charles I in 1626 to a close friend, William Murray. Who, with his wife, Catherine, soon set about altering and decorating Ham House in their own style and taste. And all this before the English Civil War in 1642.
The packed history of Ham House is teeming with wars, intrigue and a lot of art collecting. The collections are of immense historical interest and can be witnessed today.
Outside, the gardens have been restored to their original design and are a delight to wander. The lavender beds are especially fragrant.
After the house, take a stroll down to the Thames. There are walks aplenty.
