Jack and Jill Windmills
On a sunny, early winter's day, a quick trot over the South Downs blows away the cobwebs – not that I let spiders live on me of course. Arachnids aside, near the village of Clayton and just off the South Downs Way sit the windmills of Jill and Jack (as you look at the map).
Two lovely 19th century corn grinders, one preserved, Jill, which can be visited, and Jack, now a private residence. You can park immediately next to the mills which makes a great base for exploring the Downs and it's free which makes a refreshing change.
You can find these iconic structures on OS map Explorer OL11 Brighton and Hove, grid reference: TQ 304 135.
Jill is maintained by the charity Jack and Jill Windmills Society with open days throughout the year. For full information their site is jillwindmill.org.uk.
