Deal Castle
I've always been an admirer of Henry VIII, 'he taketh no crapeth' (ye olde English – honest!) So, to walk in his footsteps, the wife and I had a very pleasant stroll from Walmer Castle (below) to Deal Castle on the east Kent coast.
Although both defences were constructed from 1539 to 1540, Deal Castle has survived as it was built, whilst Walmer Castle is now a grand home with designer gardens.
Following the shoreline there is a walk and cycle path that affords wide panoramas over the Channel and the façades of historic Deal. Taking in the sea air on the pier is a simple pleasure.
