Windrush Generation
In 1948, a ship named HMT (His Majesty's Transport) Empire Generation docked at Tilbury carrying 1,027 migrants from the West Indies.
Decades later surviving members and their families were embroiled in a political scandal with the British Government concerning the disgusting, illegal treatment of these people.
I'm not going to waffle on about the facts and my opinions, there is enough said and written on the subject, but the Empire Windrush Landing Memorial at Tilbury near the London International Cruise Terminal, is a poignant reminder that they are people just trying to get along in life.
The landing stage has been turned into a photographic display showcasing ordinary people living their lives. Rather absorbing actually. There are tours available if you want to delve further.
