Waverley Paddle Steamer
In 2013 I booked tickets for a journey on the only ocean-going paddle steamer in the world; the Waverley.
This gentle 'paddle' was to take us along the Thames from Gravesend's Town Pier culminating at Tower Bridge with the raising of the bascules. Unfortunately, the heavens opened all day with the Waverley resembling the Ark.
The majestic steamer made a grand sight though. Its half-red funnels breaking through the grey as it slipped in gently beside the pier.
Despite the horrendous weather there was a good turn out, although outdoor seating was the preserve of the hardy or those robed in waterproofs.
Scenic highlights:
- Queen Elizabeth II Bridge
- Thames Barrier
- Emirates Air Line (cable car)
- The O2 Arena
- Tower Bridge – raised for the Waverley
- HMS Belfast
- Tower of London
