St Thomas à Becket church

Sitting lonesome on the Marsh in Kent, St Thomas à Becket church is a fascinating time capsule. The original timber building dates back to the 13th century and remained so until the 18th century, when a brick outer shell and tile roof was built. Much of the original frame work has now been replaced but fortunately the Georgian interior remains untouched.

Visitors are greeted with gleaming white box pews lined with black, the triple deck pulpit looming over parishioners. Look for the unusual seven-side font and bible texts adorning the walls. This church is a lovely piece of working history.

An icon of Kent, this church makes an ideal resting place when exploring the footpaths of the marshes. Further up the lane you will find a farmhouse where you can access the church door key. It's hanging on the wall, you can see it from the road. Please return it.
