St Mary's church
The only Romney Marsh church in East Sussex (the other 13 are in Kent), St Mary's, East Guldeford is unusual in several ways. Built entirely from brick and privately funded by Sir Richard Guldeford, the church sits on private land but is open to the public. Dating back to the 16th century, a consecration was held by Richard Fitzjames, Bishop of Chichester in 1505.
Inside you will find box pews and a two tier pulpit plus a remarkable frieze depicting the Six Days of Creation, painted in the late 19th-century. There is a car park in front of the church. Look for the lane on the right-hand side just past Salts Farm shop on the A259 coming from Rye.
