Chislehurst Caves
If you've never experienced true blackness, a visit to Chislehurst Caves, Kent is just the answer. Actually mines, these twenty-two miles of tunnels were worked from the 1250s to the 19th century for flint and chalk. An ammunition store during WWI, mushrooms were grown here during the 1930s and air-raid shelter from the WWII German bombers, these mines have stories to tell.
In the swinging sixties and later, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd plus others all used the caves for a venue. Doctor Who is just one TV programme filmed here.
The guide was very good, informative and humorous. Recreating the sounds of the Blitz brought home the effect it must have had and then, there was the blackness . . .
