Old Soar Manor

Grade I listed, Old Soar Manor near Plaxtol, Kent is the remains of a knights residence from the 13th century. Amazing.

Today, only the chapel, latrine and solar survive after the great hall was replaced by a farmhouse in the 18th century. This itself is Grade II listed.

Originally owned by the influential Culpeper family, it is now a English Heritage ruin maintained by the omnipresent National Trust.

Although there is not much to see, the fact that it has survived a thousand years make it a worthwhile visit. And it's free.
