Knightshayes
Built with substantial profits from the lace industry in the 19th century, this fascinating gothic revival mansion was the vision of the very wealthy Heathcoat Amory family.
Their story is far too long to tell here but their legacy is a wonderful house and garden. Wonder at the interior, the original work of two designers, William Burges and John Dibblee Crace, their ideas being too avant-garde for the family and later covered over.
The formal gardens demand a wander, whilst there are woodland gardens, parkland, woodland and a kitchen garden to explore. Look for the topiary dogs chasing the foxes and tulip displays – nice.
