Gold Hill, Shaftesbury

Popularised by Sir Ridley Scott's 1973 Hovis advert, Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Devon, is an iconic visit, especially by those of a certain age, looking for a little nostalgia.

Although the houses are better kept, the thatched cottages remain along with the cobbled hill and if you squint in sepia tone (Google the original ad), you can still see the young lad flying downwards legs akimbo.

An early start avoids the crowds.

Only a few footsteps away is Shaftesbury Abbey Church. A very rare nun only abbey, the ruins are peaceful and the museum full of engrossing artefacts. Donations welcome.
