St Nicholas church
I never thought I would have a favourite church but I have and this is it, St Nicholas' at Barfreston, Kent. Looking more like a Romanesque villa every wall is adorned with exquisite carved religious symbols and fine gargoyles. Having no tower, the church bell is suspended from a nearby tree operated by a rope inside the church – a first for me.
Inside is no less impressive. Intricate arches and pillars give the space a very welcoming and calming feel, while remnants of wall paintings tease of its once opulent interior. Spend some time here, there is a lot to take in. One downside, parking is extremely limited on the narrow country lane. I always go on Google Earth street view to plan my visit.
