Polesden Lacey
Home to the hostess with the 'mostess', Dame Margaret Greville, daughter of William McEwan, brewery owner and rich bloke, Polesden Lacey was her's and hubby's weekend retreat to entertain royalty and other souls deemed worthy. Liked and disliked, Mrs Greville was cool for her time; she possessed her own Spitfire, sadly long gone.
Now owned by the National Trust, this fine Edwardian country mansion houses many old masters and ceramics, while the rooms glitter with opulence, showcasing her wealth. It's a nice walk around the estate but leave a visit to June or July to enjoy the rose garden in full bloom. Surprisingly, you can find a little quiet corner even when very busy. A place to return to.
