Johnsons Corner Memorial
Situated on Johnson's Corner at the T-junction of the B2067 Hamstreet and the A2070, this little bit of WWII aviation history is tucked away from public gaze.
Very briefly, the memorial is dedicated to the honour of Lieutenant William H Johnson, who in 1944 bravely gave his life to save his B-17 Flying Fortress crew and the inhabitants of nearby Hamstreet.
With his crew bailed, Johnson ditched his badly damaged craft averting a great loss of civilian life. The days when men were men . . . The information board makes for interesting reading.
