Red Sands Forts

The Waverley Paddle Steamer evokes memories of slower, gentler times.

Restored to its former glory, it's a great way to discover our coastal history. In October 2015, I took a trip up the Thames Estuary on the Waverley to see the Red Sands Forts.

These once fortified towers or Maunsell Forts, were placed in the Mersey and Thames estuaries as WWII defences. The forts, originally joined by gangways, are now derelict but served as bases for pirate radio during the 60s.
