This delightful area offers short or long hikes, camping, climbs, scrambles, canoeing, sailing, mountain biking, off-roading or horse back riding and lots more.
Being compact, the advantage is you don’t have to go far to start your day.
Having visited many, many times over the last two decades, I decided to do a multi-day hike taking in the 16 major lakes, some reservoirs, hill tops, passes and some more lakes! This I thought would quench my thirst for the fells and hills. Unfortunately, it only made me thirstier.
Due to a bad hip, I took 12 days to complete the hike carrying 16kgs, seven nights wild camping and five in B&Bs. If you’re fit or short of time it can be done in four days, but one week would be a comfortable and very pleasant walk. The extra days also meant I could dodge the really bad weather.
The following pages give a brief day by day breakdown of route, stops and mileage. Obviously you can design your own trek but I hope these ramblings might give you some inspiration.
